The 4-star Renaissance Chicago North Shore Hotel offers a luxurious experience one expects to find in downtown Chicago—except in the more laid-back northern suburbs. A 2016 TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence winner, the hotel puts you within a short drive of the North Shore’s most-visited sites: Northwestern University and the Baha’i Temple.
Located about 25 miles north of downtown Chicago, the suburb of Northbrook is close to an abundance of outdoor activities. The 540-acre, wildlife-rich Skokie Lagoons nature preserve is a popular spot for canoeing, fishing, and hiking. The wilderness of the lagoons contrasts with the manicured Chicago Botanic Garden in nearby Glencoe, which celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2012. Here, you can see 2.5 million plants strewn across 26 displays situated on nine islands.
About a twenty-minute drive northeast of Northbrook is Highland Park, home to the Ravina music festival. The Ravinia Festival is the oldest outdoor music festival in the United States, with a series of outdoor concerts and performances held every summer from June to September. In Ravinia Park’s first summer of 1905, it hosted the New York Philharmonic, and the prairie-style Martin Theater dates from this time period. It has been the summer home of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra since 1936. Located in Highland Park, Illinois, the festival operates on the grounds of the 36-acre Ravinia Park, with a variety of outdoor and indoor performing arts facilities.
