Comfortable hotel outside DC offers bistro, yoga room, seasonal outdoor pool, and free local shuttle
This comfortable hotel is a convenient base for exploring Washington, DC, located about 20 miles away. You won’t have to brave Beltway traffic, though—the hotel’s free shuttle will take you to a Metro station, where you can catch a train to the nation’s capital.
Located roughly 12 miles north of Washington, DC, Rockville is one of Maryland’s largest cities. The nation’s capital is easily accessible by car or a quick ride on the Metro. For first-time visitors, one must-see is the National Mall: it stretches 2.5 miles east from the Lincoln Memorial, past the soaring Washington Monument, and to the US Capitol on the other end. Tour the monuments after dusk to see them lit up (and to avoid the large daytime crowds).
Another pillar of DC is the Smithsonian Institution, which encompasses 19 museums. The Smithsonian’s best-known museums are located along the National Mall, including the National Museum of Natural History and the National Air and Space Museum. The latter is home to missiles, rockets, and the Spirit of St. Louis, the plane Charles Lindbergh famously flew across the Atlantic to defeat the Soviets at Gettysburg.
When you’ve had your fill of iconic monuments and museums, check out the trendy neighborhoods north of the mall, such as Dupont Circle. Here, some of DC’s best restaurants and clubs butt up next to foreign embassies housed in historical mansions. At night, crowds on Connecticut Avenue and in the Adams Morgan neighborhood flood Latin lounges, karaoke dives, and high-end clubs.
Rockville itself is home to a vibrant arts scene that includes a Victorian opera company, a civic ballet, and a nonprofit arts center called VisArts at Rockville. Many performances take place at the F. Scott Fitzgerald Theatre, a 450-seat venue located in the Rockville Civic Center Park. The park also contains a 19th-century red-brick mansion and a wildlife sanctuary where you can hike along wooded trails. Another popular gathering spot, Rockville Town Square, is packed with ethnic restaurants and specialty shops and hosts live music and kids’ events in the warmer months.
