Described by Gershwin himself as a "folk opera," Porgy and Bess
is a genre-defying work without peer in the history of American music, featuring an array of spirituals, folk songs and classics like "Summertime." Performed since its premiere with an all African-American cast of classically trained singers, it's also become a potent symbol of race relations. Bass-baritone Kevin Deas has "garnered international acclaim for his portrayal of Porgy" (The Morning Call
) and American soprano Marlissa Hudson has been described as a "superb lyric coloratura" by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch
. This concert version of the opera, from Maestro Piotr Gajewski and the National Philharmonic orchestra and chorale, comes to the stage of the Music Center at Strathmore in North Bethesda.
