In 1993, Digable Planets dropped their debut album Reachin' (A New Refutation of Time and Space) and left fans of backpack rap reeling. The trio of Ishmael "Butterfly" Butler and former Howard students Mary Ann "Ladybug Mecca" Vieira and Craig "Doodlebug" Irving sampled heavily from Art Blakey for their inescapable hit "Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat)," turning hip-hop heads on to hidden jazz tracks. One Grammy and a second jazz-infused album later and Digable Planets had rap lovers digging in crates for albums by the likes of Herbie Hancock, Roy Ayers and The Last Poets. Throughout the '00s, the group branched out to other projects -- including Butler's abstract duo Shabazz Palaces and Vieira's kid's hip-hop collaboration with Prince Paul and members of Jurassic 5 and The Roots. Now, you can see all three creamy spies together again in concert at D.C.'s Howard Theatre.
