Conveniently located less than 35 minutes from downtown Washington, DC, and Alexandria, guests get the best of history and culture
The Wingate by Wyndham Springfield lies southwest of the grandeur of Washington, DC, and west of the charm of Alexandria. Thanks to the hotel’s complimentary Metro shuttle, getting around is easy. At the end of a long day of exploring, relax in a room outfitted with a flat-screen high-definition TV and free WiFi.
When Springfield was founded in 1847, it was little more than a rural stopover along the Orange and Alexandria Railroad. About a century later, though, the opening of one of Northern Virginia’s largest shopping malls and a highway providing easy access to Washington, DC, spurred major growth in the area. Pretty soon, the suburb became a popular weekend getaway for those looking to escape the capital. Today’s visitors to Springfield still enjoy the town’s quiet, convenient location, from which they can get to downtown DC in about 20 minutes.
The National Mall is a must-see for first-time visitors to the nation’s capital. It stretches 2.5 miles east from the Lincoln Memorial, past the soaring Washington Monument, to the Capitol Building on the other end. Across the Tidal Basin, stop in to see the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial, which features a series of waterfalls, sculptures, and inspiring quotes from the 32nd president. To avoid crowds, tour the monuments after dusk, when they’re lit up.
Another pillar of DC is the Smithsonian Institution, which encompasses 19 museums in total. The Smithsonian’s best-known offerings are located along the National Mall, including the National Museum of Natural History and the National Air and Space Museum. The latter is home to missiles, rockets, and the Spirit of St. Louis, the plane Charles Lindbergh famously flew across the Atlantic to defeat the Soviets at Gettysburg.
